QC Human Milk Bank aims for more donors
The government of Quezon City seeks to increase donations of human milk this third quarter to help more babies. Quezon City Human Milk Bank (QCHMB) head Dr. Shahani Duque said her organization will take action to raise awareness and boost the number of qualified donors of milk.
From April to June this year, the QCHMB said more than 550 lactating mothers donated milk.
However, only 80% (49, 680 ml) of the complete donated milk of 63, 485 milliliters (ml) passed the pasteurization test.
It was found that approximately 13,800 ml were infected and discarded, Dr. Duque said.
Duque stressed the significance of screening donor moms to guarantee that they are not infected with HIV, hepatitis B and other breast milk illnesses.
As part of its goal to increase the number of donors and qualified milk donations, QCHMB held a Milk Letting Activity on July 15. Novaliches District Hospital (NDH) will be holding a Breastfeeding Month milk-leaving activity on August 5.
