Quezon City will start distributing on February 18 some 2,500 sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and 3,500 N95 masks to the frontliners who are monitoring and transporting possible patients afflicted with the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

"We moved for the emergency procurement of disposable PPEs and N95 masks to provide adequate protection for our frontliners who have to deal with persons under investigation (PUI) for possible COVID-19,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte.

“We are the first city to do this because we believe it is better to be safe than sorry,” she added.

Next week, Belmonte will lead the distribution of PPE sets after the training of barangay health workers and Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTs) on Tuesday.

She explained that the unused PPEs have a shelf life of three years so it can be utilized for other purposes as the need arises.

The mayor has allotted 445 PPEs to the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO), 300 each to the City Health Department (CHD), Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital, Novaliches District Hospital and Quezon City General Hospital and six PPEs each for the city’s 142 barangays.

Belmonte noted one disposable PPE set includes goggles, N95 mask, surgical mask, gown, coverall suit, footwear protection, gloves and headcap.

“We want to ensure that our health frontliners are safe from the virus, especially since our role is to transport PUIs to our sentinel hospitals,” said QCDRRMO head Mike Marasigan.

Marasigan added that only those with the certificate of training will be allowed to use and wear PPEs, and will be allowed to help in transporting PUIs.

Belmonte said the city has already procured additional 3,000 N95 mask, 300 non-contact infrared thermometers for schools and 6 high-grade thermal cameras to be used by hospitals, CHD and the QCDDRMO.

“The additional protective gear and equipment will arrive next week,” concluded Belmonte.
