Mayor Joy supports PRRD’s environment protection campaign
Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quezon City joins President Rodrigo Duterte's call to step up environmental protection initiatives as part of her engagement to making Quezon City a green and sustainable city.
“We join President Duterte’s call for local government units to intensity their campaign to protect the environment. Hindi na ito bago sa Quezon City dahil marami tayong mga umiiral na programang para sa ikagaganda ng ating kalikasan,” Mayor Belmonte stated.
President Duterte urged local government units "to take extra steps in the enforcement of our laws and the protection of our environment" in his fourth State of the Nation Address on Monday, July 22, 2019.
Mayor Belmonte has initiated several programs that promote the environment since her term as City Vice Mayor.
Mayor Belmonte started Joy of Urban Farming that encourages public schools to plant vegetables in the school yard.
“Ngayong ako’y mayor na, una sa aking listahan ang mga programa para sa lalo pang ikagaganda ng kalikasan. Nakapaloob sa aking 14-point legislative agenda na gawing malinis, malusog, at makakalikasan ang ating siyudad,” Mayor Belmonte said.
Also included in her priority programs are the clearing of riverways and drainage and installation of Materials Recovery Facilities in the city’s 142 barangays.
These initiatives aim for better waste collection and segregation, and mitigation of flooding in the city’s streets.
Moreover, Mayor Belmonte instructed public order and security departments to carry out in a humane way, without depriving individuals of their homes and livelihood, the clearing of obstructions in the city sidewalks.
“In the process of these clearing operations, we will be mindful always on the mantra: serving with our hearts. We will act humanely,” Mayor Joy explained.
Mayor Joy also assured an improvement and development of the city’s parks and reservations to provide the residents a cleaner and greener infrastructure.
